Counseling and Community PDF
By:Rod Wilson
Published on 2003-04-01 by Regent College Publishing

Traditionally, counseling has focused primarily on the individual--overlooking the interaction between the community and the individual. Wilson has created a biblically-based counseling model that anchors the individual within the community. The result is a perspective that encompasses all aspects of a person's life, where the community becomes a helper in the counseling process. The thesis of this book is tied to the assumption that we need a counseling approach that is community-oriented rather than exclusively focused on the individual. When this is the case, we will be able to appreciate the biblical emphasis on the people of God. While he prizes a relationship with individuals, God's heart is with a body, a fellowship, a community. Both pastors and private counselors need to reaffirm the priority of community and its power in the healing process. Rod Wilson (PhD, York University) is President and Professor of Counselling and Psychology at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He is also the author of Exploring Your Anger and Helping Angry People.

Self, Community and Psychology PDF
By:Norman Duncan (Ph. D.)
Published on 2004-01-01 by Juta and Company Ltd

This is a reader for students at the University of South Africa studying community psychology. It brings together some of the best recent local work written from critical, social constructionist, participatory and liberatory perspectives. The text was selected from two volumes dealing with social psychology and critical psychology respectively (Critical Psychology edited by Derek Hook, Nhlanhla Mkhize, Peace Kiguwa and Anthony Collins and Social Psychology: Identities and Relationships edited by Kopano Ratele and Norman Duncan). Both titles were published by UCT Press. The book provides a broad introduction to community psychology and power and social formations and posits a liberatory response utilising critical analysis, self-definition and collective action. This text addresses ideologies of race, gender and sexuality that together create particular South African post-colonial realities which legitimise oppression and cultural dispossession.

Building Wireless Community Networks PDF
By:Rob Flickenger
Published on 2003 by |O'Reilly Media, Inc.|

Building Wireless Community Networks is about getting people online using wireless network technology. The 802.11b standard (also known as WiFi) makes it possible to network towns, schools, neighborhoods, small business, and almost any kind of organization. All that's required is a willingness to cooperate and share resources. The first edition of this book helped thousands of people engage in community networking activities. At the time, it was impossible to predict how quickly and thoroughly WiFi would penetrate the marketplace. Today, with WiFi-enabled computers almost as common as Ethernet, it makes even more sense to take the next step and network your community using nothing but freely available radio spectrum. This book has showed many people how to make their network available, even from the park bench, how to extend high-speed Internet access into the many areas not served by DSL and cable providers, and how to build working communities and a shared though intangible network. All that's required to create an access point for high-speed Internet connection is a gateway or base station. Once that is set up, any computer with a wireless card can log onto the network and share its resources. Rob Flickenger built such a network in northern California, and continues to participate in network-building efforts. His nuts-and-bolts guide covers: Selecting the appropriate equipment Finding antenna sites, and building and installing antennas Protecting your network from inappropriate access New network monitoring tools and techniques (new) Regulations affecting wireless deployment (new) IP network administration, including DNS and IP Tunneling (new) His expertise, as well as his sense of humor and enthusiasm for the topic, makes Building Wireless Community Networks a very useful and readable book for anyone interested in wireless connectivity.

Entrepreneurship, Community, and Community Development PDF
By:Michael W-P Fortunato,Theodore R. Alter
Published on 2017-08-09 by Routledge

While entrepreneurship is widely cited as playing a key role in economic development, job creation, and advances in well-being in capitalist nations, there has been an overwhelming focus on the firm, firm founders, and founders’ strategies and decision-making processes. Only more recently, the important link between communities and entrepreneurs has emerged as a new frontier in entrepreneurship research. This book brings the emerging nexus between community and entrepreneur to light by exploring the mutual impact that communities and entrepreneurs have on one another. It focuses on how entrepreneurship development can push beyond the traditional emphasis on economic growth: from enriching the local lifestyle to building self-sufficiency; from attracting new markets to rediscovering traditional work; from the highest tech enterprises to the most ancient crafts and trades. The authors cover a wide variety of topics including rural community entrepreneurship development and culture, innovation and regional development, community-based enterprise learning, and urban revitalization strategies. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Community Development.

The San Francisco Renaissance PDF
By:Michael Davidson
Published on 1991-06-28 by Cambridge University Press

Though the term |San Francisco Renaissance| is usually associated with the Beat movement, it was in reality a collage of different communities, often at odds with one another, whose agendas were social and political as much as aesthetic. These subcommunities provided important contexts for subsequent counterculture developments such as gay liberation, feminism, and the New Left long before those movements attracted widespread public attention. In his study of these various impulses Michael Davidson devotes chapters to central figures such as Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, William Everson, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Jack Spicer. He also examines the important but largely neglected context of women writers in a period dominated by misogynistic views. His final chapter brings things up to date by looking at developments in the Bay Area since the death of Jack Spicer.
