Credit to the Community PDF
By:Daniel Immergluck
Published on 2004 by M.E. Sharpe

Credit to the Community provides the an examination of community reinvestment and fair lending problems and policies currently available. It outlines the history of lending discrimination and redlining in U.S. mortgage and small business lending markets and documents the persistence of such problems even today. The author explains the role that government has played in developing banking and credit markets in the United States, from the creation of Alexander Hamilton's First Bank of United States to the ongoing support government provides through the subsidization of secondary markets and the maintenance of critical regulatory infrastructure. Dan Immergluck takes issue with those calling for deregulation of financial services - especially in the arena of fair lending and consumer protection - and gives a new voice to rationales for such social contract policies as the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). He also provides a long-term analysis on the failure of federal bank regulators to enforce the CRA and shows how successful periods of increased community activism and media attention have led to sporadic periods of stronger CRA enforcement. Finally, he recommends a number of policy changes that are needed to modernize the nation's fair lending and community reinvestment laws and make them more relevant for the twenty-first century.

Defending Community PDF
By:Randy Stoecker
Published on 2010 by Temple University Press

Randy Stoecker's intimate biography of Cedar-Riverside, nationally known for a period as |the Haight-Ashbury of the Mid-West,| contains important lessons about the conflicts between the needs of capitalism and the needs of community. While attending graduate school at the University of Minnesota, the author moved to Cedar-Riverside, a Minneapolis neighborhood known for its determination to enact values of peace, justice, wholeness, participation, and community in its truest sense. There he experienced first-hand the clashes between a radical community and state-backed urban developers. His narrative tells the story of a community that overcame the odds against its own survival. Slated for total demolition, the neighborhood was saved by a powerful grass-roots movement. Citizens stopped a state-capital coalition from entombing the community in concrete and went on to create one of the largest community controlled urban redevelopment projects in the country After more than twenty years of struggle, Cedar-Riverside continues to experience citizen-controlled urban redevelopment on its own terms, setting an example for other communities, urban planners, and policymakers. In the series Conflicts in Urban and Regional Development, edited by John R. Logan and Todd Swanstrom.

Independent Women PDF
By:Martha Vicinus
Published on 1992-11-11 by University of Chicago Press

Martha Vicinus's subject is the middle-class English woman, the first of her sex who could afford to live on her own earnings 'outside heterosexual domesticity or church governance.' She wanted and needed to work. Meticulous, resonant, original, triumphant, Independent Women tells of the efforts and endurance of this Victorian woman; of her courage and the constraints that she rejected, accepted, and created. . . . The independent women are the 'foremothers' of any women today who seeks significant work, emotionally satisfying friendships, and a morally charged freedom.|—from the Foreword by Catharine R. Stimpson |Feminist insight combines with vast research to produce a dramatic narrative. Independent Women chronicles the energetic lives and imaginative communal structures invented by women who 'pioneered new occupations, new living conditions, and new public roles.'|—Lee R. Edwards, Ms. |Vicinus is to be congratulated for her brave and unflinching portraits of twisted spinsters as well as stolid saints. That she stretches her net up into the '20s and covers the women's suffrage momement is a brilliant stroke, for one may see clearly how it was possible for women to mount such an enormous and successful political campaign.|—Jane Marcus, Chicago Tribune Book World |Vicinus' beautifully written book abounds in rich historical detail and in subtle psychological insights in the character of its protagonists. The author understands the complexities of the interplay between economic and social conditions, cultural values, and the aims and aspirations of individual personalities who act in history. . . . A superb achievement.|—Gerda Lerner, Reviews in American History |Martha Vicinus has with intelligence and energy paved and landscaped the road on which scholars and students of activist women all travel for many years.|—Blanche Wiesen Cook, Women's Review of Books |Independent Women can be read by anyone with an interest in women's history. But for all contemporary women, unconsciously enjoying privileges and freedoms once bought so dearly, this book should be required reading.|—Catharine E. Boyd, History

Published on 2001-01-01 by Greenwood Publishing Group

With the federal government's emphasis on workforce development, community colleges have become important entities in the national policy agenda and have taken on renewed importance to states. This book provides a critical analysis of various federal, state, and institutional policies affecting community colleges at the start of the 21st century. Addressed to anyone interested in the future of the community college, the book first examines the national historical and cultural policy context affecting community colleges, including federal policies, state governance structures, and the impact of globalization. At the state level, authors focus on critical issues requiring policy decisions: links with K-12 education, workforce preparation, dual credit policies, tranfer and articulation, remediation, and technology. At the institutional level, policies on general education and student persistence are examined. The book concludes with a plea for a more critical approach to community college policy for the 21st century.

Community PDF
By:Peter Block
Published on 2009-09-01 by Berrett-Koehler Publishers

Most of our communities are fragmented and at odds within themselves. Businesses, social services, education, and health care each live within their own worlds. The same is true of individual citizens, who long for connection but end up marginalized, their gifts overlooked, their potential contributions lost. What keeps this from changing is that we are trapped in an old and tired conversation about who we are. If this narrative does not shift, we will never truly create a common future and work toward it together. What Peter Block provides in this inspiring new book is an exploration of the exact way community can emerge from fragmentation. How is community built? How does the transformation occur? What fundamental shifts are involved? What can individuals and formal leaders do to create a place they want to inhabit? We know what healthy communities look likee|there are many success stories out there. The challenge is how to create one in our own place.Block helps us see how we can change the existing context of community from one of deficiencies, interests, and entitlement to one of possibility, generosity, and gifts. Questions are more important than answers in this effort, which means leadership is not a matter of style or vision but is about getting the right people together in the right way: convening is a more critical skill than commanding. As he explores the nature of community and the dynamics of transformation, Block outlines six kinds of conversation that will create communal accountability and commitment and describes how we can design physical spaces and structures that will themselves foster a sense of belonging. In Community, Peter Block explores a way of thinking about our places that creates an opening for authentic communities to exist and details what each of us can do to make that happen.

Growing Community Forests PDF
By:Ryan Bullock,Gayle Broad,Lynn Palmer,M.A. (Peggy) Smith
Published on 2017-10-13 by Univ. of Manitoba Press

Canada is experiencing an unparalleled crisis involving forests and communities across the country. While municipalities, policy makers, and industry leaders acknowledge common challenges such as an overdependence on US markets, rising energy costs, and lack of diversification, no common set of solutions has been developed and implemented. Ongoing and at times contentious public debate has revealed an appetite and need for a fundamental rethinking of the relationships that link our communities, governments, industrial partners, and forests towards a more sustainable future. The creation of community forests is one path that promises to build resilience in forest communities and ecosystems. This model provides local control over common forest lands in order to activate resource development opportunities, benefits, and social responsibilities. Implementing community forestry in practice has proven to be a complex task, however: there are no road maps or well-developed and widely-tested models for community forestry in Canada. But in settings where community forests have taken hold, there is a rich and growing body of experience to draw on. The contributors to Growing Community Forests include leading researchers, practitioners, Indigenous representatives, government representatives, local advocates, and students who are actively engaged in sharing experiences, resources, and tools of significance to forest resource communities, policy makers, and industry.
